Licenses & Attribution

Last updated: 21 June 2026

Artwork of the Day assembles everything it shows live from open data published by the Wikimedia projects. We hold no copyright over that source material; it remains under the licenses of its contributors, summarised below. Each item on the site links back to its original source so attribution is always traceable.

Application code MIT

The software running this site is released under the MIT License, © Sun & Rain Works. It is independent of, and not endorsed by, the Wikimedia Foundation or any institution named in the data.

Facts & structured data — Wikidata CC0 1.0

Titles, dates, mediums, dimensions, biographical facts, relationships, and identifiers come from Wikidata, released into the public domain under CC0 1.0. No attribution is legally required; we link to each entity on Wikidata anyway, for provenance and so you can verify or improve the data.

Encyclopedic text — Wikipedia CC BY-SA 4.0

The "About the artist / About the painting" overviews are the lead summaries of the corresponding English Wikipedia articles, used under CC BY-SA 4.0. Each summary is attributed inline and links to its source article, whose page history lists the authors. Reuse of that text must keep the attribution and remain under CC BY-SA.

Images — Wikimedia Commons licenses vary

Artwork and artist images are served from Wikimedia Commons. Each image has its own license and author — public domain, CC BY, CC BY-SA, or others. We do not relicense them. The image on each artwork links to its Commons file page, which states the specific author, license, and any reuse conditions for that file. Faithful photographic reproductions of public-domain artworks are generally public domain in their country of origin; always check the file page before reuse.

Vocabularies

Our Linked Art records reference the Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) and other Getty vocabularies by URI; those terms are made available by the J. Paul Getty Trust under the ODC Attribution License.

How we keep track. Attribution is maintained live rather than in a static list: every artwork links to its Wikidata item and Commons file page, and every Wikipedia summary links to its source article. As the underlying data changes, the credit on the page changes with it.

Trademarks & non-affiliation

"Wikidata", "Wikipedia", "Wikimedia Commons", and related marks belong to the Wikimedia Foundation. Museum and collection names belong to their respective owners. This site is an independent project and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any of them.

No warranty & corrections

Data is provided "as is", drawn live from third-party sources, and may contain errors. If you are a rights holder and believe content is shown incorrectly, or you would like an image or attribution corrected or removed, please get in touch via the project repository and we will respond promptly.
